At Ten, Bernie Isn’t Remotely Ready to Slow Down.
Ten-year-old Bernie may be a senior on paper, but you would never know it. This handsome 30 lb. American Eskimo still has the energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm of a much younger dog. Alert, intelligent, and easygoing, Bernie is looking for a home that will let him enjoy the active life he loves.
For years, Bernie was the perfect outdoor companion. He hiked, snowshoed, camped, and even ran several kilometres alongside his family. Life has changed, and with two young children, a very senior unwell dog, and a busy household, his family knows they can no longer give him the time and adventures that once made him so happy. They have made the difficult decision to find him a home where he can enjoy life to the fullest again.
Bernie loves being outside. Whether he is sniffing along a trail, strolling through the neighbourhood, or simply relaxing in the garden, that is where he is happiest. A securely fenced yard where he can spend time outdoors would be ideal.
He enjoys meeting people and is genuinely fond of strangers. He may bark excitedly when visitors arrive, but once the excitement passes, he is the first to seek out affection and attention. Bernie has basic obedience training and highly treat motivated.
Bernie currently lives with another dog and is comfortable around dogs smaller than himself, but he is not looking for a canine companion. He prefers his own space and simply walks away if another dog becomes too intrusive. He would be happiest as the only dog in the home.
He is gentle, patient, and tolerant with children, though he is unlikely to seek out their attention. He could do well with dog-savvy children who are calm, respectful, and happy to offer gentle affection without expecting too much from him.
Bernie can bark for a short time when first left alone, so we feel he would be better suited to a house rather than a condo or apartment.
Bernie is neutered, housetrained, vaccinated, and microchipped. If the property has a swimming pool, it must be separately fenced for his safety.
