It’s 5 months since Buddy’s owner died and he is desperately waiting to find his new person.
Buddy is a 4+ year old Maltese whose beloved owner passed away in November, and since then this sensitive little dog has struggled significantly. He needs time to trust again with compassionate, patient people, who will ride the waves until Buddy feels totally comfortable again.
While he is mostly super affectionate and friendly, he can also be reactive to sudden movements or surprises and when pushed beyond his comfort level. In response he may air snap and has nipped. Luckily he is highly food motivated, and this works well with building his trust. Buddy is not a turnkey dog, he has experienced loss and instability and is now showing the fallout of that upheaval. He needs an experienced person who can handle his personality, someone steady, patient, and realistic. With time, consistency, and proper boundaries, he has a great capacity to become a loyal and devoted companion again.
He is energetic and enjoys brisk walks and adores zoomies in the yard. He eagerly jumps into the car but can whimper during short rides, especially with frequent stops. When left alone, he typically whines and can be vocal for a bit before settling. He can stay alone for a few hours, but he does not do well with long workdays or a quiet, empty home.
Buddy weighs 12 pounds, is neutered, vaccinated, and in good health. Buddy must go to an adult-only home with no children. A condo or apartment is likely not appropriate due to his vocal tendencies. If there is a yard, it must be securely fenced, as he is a curious explorer. Pools must have separate fencing. He has never lived with a cat. A calm, stable dog in the home, ideally larger and confident, may be an asset.
He is a special dog with a lovely core personality, but he needs the right environment and a committed adopter to help him feel secure again.
