KOJI, A SHIBA INU, TEN YEARS YOUNG
Koji’s parents adore him and are heartsick to have to rehome him. Read below for a very transparent post as to why they can not keep him.
We have known Koji his entire life, and after all these wonderful years together are faced with a heartbreaking situation. We have a one-year-old daughter, with whom Koji has always been kind and caring. But recently, when jumped on by a visiting toddler while he was asleep, Koji was startled and became aggressive for an instant. While we would like to believe that this was circumstantial and will never happen again as he loves our daughter, who is now is now a toddler herself, and cannot yet understand to respect Koji’s boundaries. We no longer feel it is safe to have him live with her in our small apartment.
Koji is hugely affectionate, and loves nothing more than a nice cuddle on the sofa with his human. He will happily stay inside for long stretches of time if he has occasional check-ins and opportunities to go outside. Alternatively, he loves being in nature, hiking, and snow (we call him “Snoji”). Nothing makes him happier than a sunny patch of grass or a forest trail.
Koji was socialized as a puppy but he began displaying reactivity with other dogs around age one. His aggression with other animals is out of anxiety, but we have managed it over the years by keeping him separate from other dogs. We worked with a couple of trainers when he was younger but he still has this issue. (We would be willing to cover the costs of a few more sessions with a behaviourist).
Koji had a recent visit to the vet and is in very good health, with no special conditions. The vet started him on a medication for his anxiety after the incident with the toddler in hopes that his reactivity would improve. So far, it seems to be working! Koji weighs 37 lbs. is neutered, microchipped and UTD on vaccines.
We are so sad to find ourselves in this situation, and want nothing but the best for our little Koji
